I grew up a cradle Catholic, and soI was going to church, but I really had no idea what that meant. I had zero relationship with Jesus, and anything that I tried to do to further my faith failed pretty epically. Once I started learning about what it actually means to be a Christian, then I started looking at my life.
I realized that I had an issue with pornography. I had tried to fast from it a couple of times because I started to realize this is not good . . . and I couldn’t do it. I’ve played sports at a high level. I played ultimate frisbee on the national team. I have been very disciplined in my work ethic, and so I felt that I could almost will myself to do anything.
And when I tried to fast from pornography on my own merit, I couldn’t do it. I knew that I needed help. I just didn’t really know where that was. And so when I heard about Exodus 90 and what the structure of that program is, and how to let God into your heart, into your life, and have Him be the number one in your life, it was like a light bulb went off in my head and I said, this is exactly what I need to do. I literally signed up that night. I literally took a cold shower and did my holy hour that night.
I think what surprised me the most is that I was being successful in fasting from my “why” of pornography and actually fasting from it. And then, as I went through the Exodus program, it wasn’t only that I was fasting from sin, this one specific habitual sin, but It was also learning about who God is, who Jesus was, how did he live, what is the story of Exodus and the Israelites as they escape Pharaoh’s enslavement, and how that ties to the story of our lives.
And so, understanding that and hearing God’s word just changed me from not only just stopping this habitual sin, but also living in a different way and seeing things differently . . . completely differently.
I really became a new person because I was more energetic. Each week that went by as I was free from this habitual sin was like, I just had this energy. I just felt stronger. You know, it’s hard to explain. And I just felt like I was doing the right thing also. And I wasn’t living a lie or kind of two faced. It was really freeing as I went on to just say, “Wow, if I can keep living like this, I can stay away from this stuff.”
I’ve done Exodus now four times. I think each year, “why would I not do this and keep this going?” There’s really no reason to stop, right? I don’t need a break from having the best relationship possible with our Lord and Savior, right? So yeah, I think the understanding that God has called us to a life that we don’t even know exists until we get a taste of it. In that 90 days, I got a taste of it.
So all I could think about is how do I keep this going? If you’re considering taking on Exodus 90, ask yourself this question” What do you have to lose? Are you afraid of failure? Because everybody fails in Exodus 90. Nobody has a perfect Exodus 90. We are not Jesus. We are aspiring to be him. We are aspiring to mimic his life and participate in it, in him.
And if you want to change your life for the better, if you want to free yourself from some type of sin or whatever it may be, then why not give that a try? Because it is proven to give men from all over the world freedom in a way that they’ve never experienced before.
